Background of the Study
Global trade agreements play a pivotal role in shaping economic policies, influencing domestic innovation strategies, and driving technological advancements. In Kano State, such agreements have spurred policy reforms aimed at fostering innovation, improving competitiveness, and integrating local industries into global value chains (Adamu, 2023). These agreements facilitate market access, encourage research and development, and promote the transfer of technology. However, while global trade policies often drive modernization, they can also create pressures for rapid change that may not align with local capabilities and industrial policies (Ibrahim, 2024). In Kano State, the push for innovation has led to increased investments in technology and education, yet challenges persist in aligning domestic policies with the expectations of international trade partners. This study investigates how global trade agreements affect domestic innovation policies in Kano State. It evaluates whether such agreements lead to positive technological spillovers and improved innovation capacity or if they impose constraints that limit local policy autonomy. The research critically analyzes policy outcomes, technological adoption rates, and innovation indicators to determine the overall impact of global trade on domestic innovation frameworks.
Statement of the problem
Despite the potential benefits of global trade agreements in promoting innovation, Kano State faces difficulties in fully leveraging these opportunities. Conflicts between international standards and local industrial practices have resulted in gaps in policy implementation and innovation adoption (Bello, 2023). Domestic industries struggle to meet the rigorous requirements of international markets while also fostering indigenous innovation. This study aims to uncover the challenges in aligning global trade policies with domestic innovation strategies, highlighting the need for policy adjustments that support local innovation while adhering to international agreements.
Objectives of the Study
To evaluate the impact of global trade agreements on domestic innovation policies in Kano State.
To identify challenges in aligning international trade standards with local innovation capacities.
To propose policy recommendations to enhance domestic innovation in the context of global trade.
